Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for more coordinated planning, reform and innovation of the country’s Free Trade Zones. His instruction came during a meeting in Shanghai on Wednesday to mark the fifth anniversary of the development of pilot FTZs in China, reports state-backed news agency Xinhua.

He urged more effort in terms of freeing people’s mind and proactively exploring ways to continue raising the level of FTZ development, as work related to the zones has allowed for major progress over the last five years.

In addition, a large number of innovative results at an institutional level are being promoted nationwide, allowing the zones to become testing grounds for the comprehensive deepening of reform, according to Xi.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang also announced that it was important for pilot FTZs to accumulate more experiences that could be copied and spread on a larger, even national, scale.

The central government has established 12 pilot FTZs across the country, where reform measures such as streamlined business registration and easier access to administrative services are tested before being promoted nationwide. The first pilot FTZ in China was launched in Shanghai in September 2013.
