Both have supported the idea that after the UK leaves the EU it could set up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.awin1.com\/awclick.php?mid=5795&amp;id=201309&amp;p=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2019\/jul\/06\/what-is-a-free-port-all-you-need-to-know-about-free-trade-zones-brexit&amp;clickref=xid:fr-1562780753737-346361-fr|referrer:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com|author:Hamish%20McRae|tag:Voices|articleid:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.independent.co.uk%2Fvoices%2Fboris-johnson-brexit-free-trade-ports-zones-economy-uktpo-a8992401.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">such zones<\/a>, in places including Aberdeen, Peterhead, Teesside&nbsp;and Belfast. There would be no customs duties so goods could be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweek.co.uk\/102070\/what-are-free-ports-and-would-they-boost-post-brexit-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">imported and exported without border taxes<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan would, according to Johnson,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pressandjournal.co.uk\/fp\/news\/politics\/westminster\/1777608\/boris-johnsons-plan-to-turbocharge-north-east-economy-with-free-port-revealed\/\">\u201cturbocharge\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;the local economy and create thousands of jobs. Although as the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sussex.ac.uk\/uktpo\/\" target=\"_blank\">UK Trade Policy Observatory<\/a>(UKTPO) at the University of Sussex&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/broadcast\/read\/47945\" target=\"_blank\">observed earlier this year<\/a>, the opposite is true.
