China: China introduces new free trade zones and improved practices

3 minutos Since 2013 China has established an increasing number of free trade zones (FTZs) around the country. These serve as ‘test beds’ for investment liberalisation and streamlined regulation (for example, faster business registration, accelerated customs procedures, and so on).  Tax incentives are also offered to businesses in the FTZs. Successful experiments in the FTZs are then frequently rolled out nationwide. In the first half of this year, China’s 12 existing FTZs attracted foreign investment of nearly RMB 70 billion ($10 billion), that is, Continue lendo

Russia’s Free Trade & Special Economic Zones

menos de 1 minuto Russia has numerous Special Economic Zones and Free Trade Ports, and is continuing to look at investing on more, especially nearer to the borders with China in both the Russian Far East and Siberia. A China encontrou, Israel encontrou… e o Brasil, ainda não

Nonetheless, being influenced by several features, the SEZs’ success varies. This study analyzes the general European framework of the ZESs to compare the role of the diferent regions in achieving economic development objectives. By using macroeconomic indicators from 2000 to 2016 for Continue lendo

Despite the popularity of SEZs as a policy tool in virtually all developing countries around the world, there is little evidence to date which systematically analyses this question. This paper sheds light on this topic by examining the economic growth spillovers generated by 346 SEZs in 22 emerging countries.  The analysis uses night light data as a proxy for SEZ performance as well as Continue lendo
