The government will prepare for the launch of three Special Economic Zones (KEK) in 2019, a KEK official stated in Jakarta on Thursday. “It can be launched next year if already completed. (The KEKs) are Sungai Liat and Tanjung Gunung in Bangka Belitung and Singosari in East Java,” Enoh Suharto Pranoto, secretary of the National KEK Council, stated in Jakarta, Thursday.

Pranoto noted that the government continues to pursue the inauguration of the three KEKs in a short time, as preparation of these three regions was almost 100 percent complete. “Coordination with ESDM (energy and mineral resources ministry), state-owned tin mining PT Timah, and the regional government is still necessary, as there is a tin mine in Bangka Belitung. However, that is just a process, and there are no problems,” he noted.

Since 2014, the government has determined 10 KEKs to be launched to develop the economic potential of the regions in the surrounding area. The KEKs are Sei Mangke, Tanjung Api-Api, Tanjung Kelayang, Tanjung Lesung, Mandalika, Maloy Batuta Trans Kalimantan, Palu, Morotai, Sorong, and Arun Lhokseumawe.

Some of the KEKs have not yet been formalized by the government, as there are still issues concerning land status. The government expects that the economic region, rich in natural resources, can be inaugurated as early as January-February.
