The Acting Managing Director, Nigeria Exports Processing Zones Authority, Mr Terhemba Nongo, has said that Nigeria’s quest for industrialisation may not be achieved without massive investments in free trade zones. He said this in Abuja during an event organised by NEPZA’s workers to mark his 60th birthday and his retirement from the agency.

Also, the Nigeria Export Promotion Council has stressed the need for business owners and other stakeholders in the export processing to embrace digital marketing as a solution to the problem of low productivity and slow growth. Present at the event for the retiring NEPZA’s boss were top management personnel of the agency and its Chairman, Mr Segun Oni.

Nongo said that while the government had set aside funds to reposition the free trade zones in the country, there was a need to get more investors to boost the level of economic activities at the zones. He said, “We have great land and resources in this country and time has come for the potential to be harnessed through the free trade zones scheme. “This country can only transform economically from the free trade zone scheme.”

Nongo urged the management and staff of NEPZA to avoid engaging in corrupt practices, adding, “No Investor will come and invest in free zones if we ask for bribes. We must be transparent when dealing with investors.”

In Jos, Plateau State, the NEPC’s Executive Director, Olusegun Awolowo, who was represented by the North Central Regional Coordinator of NEPC, Dr Ezra Yakusak, said digital marketing and services in modern business would enable the country to realise its ambition to attain its zero-oil economic plan. He explained that dynamism and sophistication in technology had affected all areas of human endeavours.

Awolowo said, “One of the major strategic functions of the NEPC is to ensure that Nigerian exporters penetrate international market sustainably. “The old and crude market penetration strategies are fast waning, giving way to technologically-driven strategies. Except we key into the modern-day technology, the zero-oil plan initiative ambition of the country may not be realisable”

He told the participants that the agency had created the Youth Export Development Programme to provide a special platform for the Nigerian youths to enable them to seamlessly participate in non-oil export business.
